UGC-NET & JRF

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has been entrusted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) with the task of conducting UGC-NET, which is a Test to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for ‘Award of Junior Research Fellowship’ ,  ‘Appointment as Assistant Professor’, ‘Appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D.’ and ‘Admission to Ph.D. only’ in Indian Universities and Colleges. The UGC-NET is being conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode w.e.f. December 2018 onwards.

Awarding Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and/ or Eligibility for Assistant Professorship and/ or Admission to Ph.D only depends on the aggregate performance of the candidate in Part-I and Part-II of UGC-NET. The candidates qualifying under the ‘appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D.’ category will be eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D. but not for the award of JRF. The candidates qualifying under the ‘admission to Ph.D. only’ category will be eligible for admission to Ph.D. only but not for the award of JRF and/or appointment as Assistant Professor.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Educational Qualification: * Master's Degree: Minimu 55% marks (General/EWS) or 50% (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD/Third gender) in a relevant subject.

   • Final Year Students: If you are in the final year of your Master's, you can apply provisionally.

   • Four-Year UG: Candidates with a 4-year Bachelor’s degree (with at least 75% marks) are now eligible to apply directly for PhD and JRF

Age Criteria:

• JRF: Maximum 30 years (as of the date specified in the 2026 notification). Relaxations of up to 5 years apply for reserved categories and women.

• Assistant Professor/PhD: There is no upper age limit.

Core Syllabus

• Paper 1: Covers 10 units including Teaching Aptitude, Research Aptitude, Reading Comprehension, Communication, Mathematical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Data Interpretation, ICT, People & Environment, and Higher Education Systems.

• Paper 2: Deep dive into one of the 85 subjects (e.g., Political Science, History, Computer Science, etc.) chosen based on your post-graduation specialization.

Examination- June -July 2026 Expected

Notification/Application: April 2026 Expected

• Admit Card: Mid-June 2026.

• Exam Dates: Likely between June 25 – June 29, 2026.

• Results: Late July 2026.

• Note: Since there is no negative marking, it is highly recommended to attempt all 150 questions. Keep an eye on the official ugcnet.nta.nic.in for the specific registration dates.
