The Uttar Pradesh Combined State / Upper Subordinate Services Examination, commonly known as the UP PCS, is the premier state-level civil service exam conducted by the UPPSC (Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission).
The exam pattern has seen significant updates recently, most notably the removal of optional subjects in the Mains stage, replaced by two papers specifically dedicated to Uttar Pradesh general knowledge.

The exam is a three-stage competitive process designed to filter for top administrative talent in the state.

The Prelims consists of two papers held on the same day. While both are out of 200 marks, they serve different purposes:
Paper I (General Studies): 150 Questions. This determines your cutoff. If you don't clear the merit for this paper, you aren't shortlisted for Mains.
Paper II (CSAT): 100 Questions. This is qualifying only. You must score at least 33% (66 marks).
Negative Marking: There is a penalty of 0.33% for every wrong answer in both papers.
Mains Examination (The Major Shift)
The Mains exam is now entirely descriptive and comprises 8 papers. The removal of the optional subject has leveled the playing field for candidates from various academic backgrounds.
